This new blog is the result of an email I got today from Brian Ringer, director of Student Media at the University of Oklahoma. Brian suggested we use the start of the coming fiscal year (July 1) to kick off a dedicated study of the future of The Oklahoma Daily, the 96-year-old OU student newspaper. The idea is to hold meetings, conduct surveys, meet with focus groups, blog, chat and stream with all our Student Media stakeholders, asking them to help us imagine the newspaper’s future.
Some of our student media peers around the country are ceasing daily publication. Others are launching themselves on new mobile platforms. All are struggling to become “online first” news organizations.
We’ve watched many of those attempts with great interest and best wishes. Are any of those paths right for us? Is there another way that would uniquely serve our unique audience?
We don’t know. But we intend to find out. I’ll keep you posted on the progress.
